Tips for jewelry care
In order to enjoy your valuable and beautiful pieces of jewelry for as long as possible, it is important to follow a few basic rules, because proper and regular care can significantly extend the life of the jewelry.
- Remove your jewelry before going to bed, as well as before showering, bathing, visiting the sauna, exercising, or sunbathing.
- Jewelry, especially rings, should not be worn while doing housework or gardening.
- Perfume or hairspray can fade the shine of the jewelry and reduce its brilliance, and in the worst case, discoloration can occur. For this reason, you should apply perfume, hairspray or other cosmetics before putting on the jewelry. Nail polish remover is also harmful to any jewelry.
Hairspray should be avoided completely when wearing pearls. Pearls also do not like contact with water, as this can dissolve the pearls' natural impregnation.
Jewellery should never be stored in damp places, such as the bathroom, as the moisture can cause the jewellery to discolour or tarnish, especially silver jewellery. - Small plastic bags are recommended for storing jewelry, as they can be sealed airtight. This way, no dust settles and silver jewelry usually tarnishes less quickly.
- Sweaty activities can damage your jewelry. This is especially true for silver and pearl jewelry.
- Chlorine, salt and thermal water particularly attack silver, stone and pearl jewelry.
- Precious/semi-precious stone necklaces and bracelets need to be re-strung from time to time, as the drilled stones have sharp edges and wear down the jewelry wire. Pearl necklaces and bracelets are also affected by this.
Do not bend the jewelry wire, otherwise the bend will remain visible. - Cleaning of silver jewelry, gold jewelry, gemstone jewelry, semi-precious stone jewelry:
We advise against using commercially available dipping baths, as they can potentially damage precious/semi-precious stones, especially pearls. If you still want to use dipping baths for some of your jewelry without precious/semi-precious stones and/or pearls, you should only use dipping baths for silver jewelry or gold jewelry; dipping baths for silver cutlery are not suitable.
Never use denture cleaner or other solvents to clean your jewelry. They will damage the valuable material. Also avoid using toothpaste.
Using jewelry cleaning cloths/jewelry care cloths is more time-consuming, but gentler on your jewelry. These cloths are usually impregnated with tarnish protection and can be used for longer after the first use.
Ideally, you should clean your jewelry after each wear with a soft cloth, ideally a jewelry cleaning cloth, to remove any cosmetic residue and sweat. If the dirt is too strong, you can also clean some pieces of jewelry with soapy water. Do not use soapy water for: pearls, amber, coral, emerald, jade, lapis lazuli, opal, turquoise.
If you want to clean your jewelry with a brush, please make sure that it is soft, otherwise your jewelry may be scratched.
Precious/semi-precious stone necklaces as well as pearl necklaces and bracelets are sensitive to cleaning because the sharp edges of the stones or pearls rub against the pearl silk or jewelry wire and cause more wear.
Important: After any type of cleaning, make sure that the jewelry is completely dry before placing it in a plastic bag or other storage medium. Pay attention to hollow spaces that take a long time to dry.
